Sylvia The Story of an American Countess Evalyn Emerson 9781358395888 Books

The most interesting thing about this turn-of-the-century romance is the publicity contest at the front of the book. I haven't been able to locate much of any indication about Emerson or other books that she might have written, except some hints from online newspaper archives that she was also an actress.

Sylvia has roots in both the US and in Europe. She is the most desired and beautiful woman on two continents. However, she wants to marry for love and not position, which pits her against the will of her proud Aunt. The novel pits her against her true love, his accidental fiance, her steadfast admirer and the whims of fate.

As romances from this period go, this isn't awful, although Emerson is no Mary J. Holmes. The book should be interesting to modern readers for the vividness of the description and the way that it details the manners of courtship and marriage of the time. Unfortunately, the plot is a bit spoilt by some unrealistic narrative devices and a strange and forced ending.

Interesting to see that it is actually back in print via Amazon. But, honestly, it's more fun if you can pick up the 1901 edition.
